The campaign to become the next Governor of South Carolina has gotten ugly, and has unfortunately become concerned with religious background. Last week, State Senator Jake Knotts used a religious slur to refer to candidate Nikki Haley, who was brought up by her Indian parents in the Sikh faith but is now a Methodist. He threw in a few other outrageous statements as well:
Knotts decided to play the religion card by declaring “We need a good Christian to be our governor. She’s hiding her religion. She ought to be proud of it. I’m proud of my god.”
For her part, Haley has decided not so much to defend her diverse heritage, but to emphasize her Christianity, a strategy that almost seems to agree with Knotts' assessment that to be Governor requires being a Christian.
The South Carolina primary is tomorrow.
