Local Group

North Texas Coalition

The North Texas Coalition of Christians Against Christian Nationalism brings people together to build a stronger community. We are addressing pressing problems and developing a counter-witness alongside our partner churches and organizations.

This local group continues to evolve and grow in the Dallas/Fort Worth area as we advocate for religious freedom for everyone. We are taking action and providing a faithful response from Christian communities in partnership with our neighbors of many different faiths and of no faith.

Our Work

Change Happens Through Action

We host coalition meetings each month, listening to each other about where we are the most effective. We alternate between in-person meetings and Zoom meetings – sign up for our email list to find out how you can join one!

We have three areas of focus.

    Immigration

Our immigration work involves bearing witness to the lives of our neighbors by serving as  court observers in immigration hearings and providing aid to families as they arrive for immigration check ins. We do this in partnership with local chicana organizers, clergy, and faith communities across North Texas.

  • Public Education

Public education is a place where people of all backgrounds can learn and live together. We’re seeing our state legislature pass laws that privilege one religion over others and create conditions of coercion for young learners, such as the state-organized prayer law or the Ten Commandments mandate. We are working to overturn these laws, reduce harm, and advocate for public schools that honor all faiths and none.

    Engaging Churches

Every community makes a choice, so the North Texas coalition is engaging churches, helping congregations identify the roots of Christian nationalism in their communities and discern their role in undoing the harm. The coalition is training and working alongside faith leaders while equipping lay leaders to spur on this work.

What Are We Currently Working On?

  • Problematic Reading List

In Texas, the state board of education is proposing a problematic reading list, and many of us have gone to Austin to testify as to why, as people of faith, this list undercuts religious freedom for our students.

  • Ten Commandments Mandate

Have you heard about the mandate for Texas public schools to post the Ten Commandments? We have a resource page for teachers.

  • A child is sitting at a table, drawing or writing on paper with a pencil in a classroom setting.

    State-Organized Prayer in Schools

Most of the school districts in Texas wisely declined to create a program for state-organized prayer.

  • A classroom with students sitting at desks facing a teacher near a whiteboard.

Required Bible Reading in Public Schools

Bluebonnet curriculum is a Bible-based, language arts curriculum used for grades K-5. We worked to block this curriculum at state and local levels. Now, we are supporting parents in opting their children out of this mandated material.

Ways You Can Take Action With Us

Our partner, Vecinos Unidos, offers a training for anyone who wants to show up at Dallas immigration court in support and solidarity with our immigrant neighbors.

  • Support Families

Looking for ways to support families before immigration check-ins? You can get trained through our partner, La Colectiva.

Support the North Texas Coalition

In 2023, we launched this pilot project, encompassing the greater Dallas/Fort Worth area. In this region particularly impacted by a proliferation of Christian nationalism, a community is growing and creating an impact. They are dedicated to raising awareness, advocating to their elected officials, and organizing for change. You can make a specific gift to support this work.
