President Obama is not expected to name a Supreme Court replacement until next week, but the anticipation is still running strong.
The Wall Street Journal reports that he started meeting with potential candidates yesterday. The Washington Post says an announcement date is a "moving target" that is "contingent on when Obama makes up his mind."
Jan Crawford Greenburg has learned that Judge Diane Wood abruptly canceled Civil Procedure class and was in Washington. The ABCNews legal correspondent believes the competition is down to three: Wood (who Jeffrey Rosen argues is "the second coming of Ruth Bader Ginsburg"), Kagan and Sotomayor. A group of conservative activists is already running online attack ads against all three.
For her part, Solicitor General Elena Kagan "spoke of the importance of judicial independence" at a conference where Justice Souter is also a scheduled speaker.
