Today marks the 227th anniversary of the signing of the U.S. Constitution in 1787. The Constitution prohibits any religious test for public office.  After the First Amendment was adopted 4 years later, it also included these 16 words, essential to our democracy and our freedom:

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof.
