The North Carolina Senate approved a measure yesterday that seeks to clarify student religious expression rights in school. It also purports to allow teachers, including coaches, to participate in student religious activities by “adopt[ing] a respectful posture.”
The House approved Senate Bill 370 earlier this month. Yesterday’s 48-1 vote sends the bill to Governor Pat McCrory for his signature.
Critics including the state’s ACLU argue the law is unnecessary, because the student rights are already guaranteed by the First Amendment, and unwise, because it may create confusion and invite litigation.
