Governor Jan Brewer has signed Arizona's "Student Religious Liberties Act" into law. The bill purports to protect student religious expression – from messages on clothing to viewpoints in homework assignments, though what it mostly does frankly is attempt to codify protections already well-established by federal courts and the US Constitution. Take for example the first sentence of the Capitol Media Services report.
Arizona schools will soon be barred from discriminating against students based on their religious preferences.
If you're thinking that should probably already be barred, you're right! It is!
Supporters of this bill (you can read HB 2357 here) hope that it will prevent violations that persist despite existing protections. Earlier post here.
