Sunrise Children's Services, formerly Kentucky Baptist Homes for Children, may be challenged in court by taxpayers objecting to the promotion of religion despite receiving public funds.
David Friedman, representing the ACLU of Kentucky, said plaintiffs will argue Sunrise is violating the constitutional ban on using public money for religious purposes by promoting its Baptist beliefs among children the state places in its care.
“No one objects to money being given to faith-based organizations,” he said. “But if you’re going to give tax money to religious organizations, they have to remain neutral.”
Friedman said the 6th Circuit ruling is important because it provides a chance to challenge such funding although most such “taxpayer” challenges are limited by the courts.
