Next week could shape up to be an important one for religious freedom. On Wednesday, Supreme Court confirmation hearings begin for Elena Kagan. Concerns over her church-state record (or, maybe the uncertainty left by her lack of one) continue. The Secular Coalition of America announced their opposition, "until she makes her support for church-state separation much more clear and emphatic." Americans United has expressed similar concerns. Read the Baptist Joint Committee's analysis of Kagan here.

Meanwhile, the Supreme Court has yet to release its decision in CLS v Martinez, the case involving a Christian student group's desire to be allowed to control its membership despite university regulations disallowing discrimination. The Court traditionally decides all cases heard in the previous term before recessing at the end of June. ADF Senior Counsel Jordan Lorence reads the tea leaves and predicts the opinion is being written by Chief Justice John Roberts.
