Oklahoma’s Capitol Preservation Commission voted 7-1 to remove the Ten Commandments monument currently on the grounds of the State Capitol, after the Oklahoma Supreme Court ruled that the religious display violates the state’s constitution. The decision by the commission hopefully avoids a showdown which some feared would take place if state officials had refused to comply with a recent court order mandating its removal.
Reuters reports the Oklahoma Republican Party has offered to serve as the new home for the 6-foot tall granite monument.
