Amid reports that the suspect was a devout Muslim who may have been the target of religious harassment from fellow soldiers, the head of the Military Religious Freedom Foundation Mikey Weinstein warns that the horrific events at Fort Hood, Texas yesterday have the potential to raise the temperature in religious tension and discrimination. Weinstein called upon President Obama to immediately issue a statement as Commander-in-Chief making it clear that there would be a zero tolerance policy against any member of the US military "inflicting harassments, retribution or reprisal against an Islamic member of the US military."
Obama issued a statement earlier Thursday condeming the shootings.
Hopefully, investigations will reveal no real religious element to this awful incident. My thoughts are with my many Texas readers, and prayerful condolences to all those closely affected. I'll never understand such things.
