The house known as the C Street Christian fellowship has lost most of its tax-exempt status after officials determined a significant percentage of it was being used for private residence and not as a house of worship. The building has been in the news lately for all the wrong reasons, as Governor Mark Sanford (R-SC) and Senator John Ensign (R-NV), former residents, received very public national attention for private indiscretions, this despite (is that the word?) their participation in the Christian-support-group-for-powerful-men the home would seem to represent.
In his book The Family, Jeff Sharlet argues the home is run by an organization (The Family) committed to using the powerful mechanisms of the state to spread conservative Christian views. Now, as reported by TPMMuckraker, the Department of Tax and Revenue has stripped the residence of 2/3 of its tax-exempt status.
