Following a letter from the Freedom From Religion Foundation warning of an impending lawsuit, the City Council of Memphis has announced a new invocation policy. Via Religion Clause, the policy allows for a rotating system of clergy and non-profit leaders and allows them to offer any invocation, inspiring words or moment of silence. While not directly asking that prayers be nonsectarian, the Council asks “that no invocation should proselytize or advance any faith, or disparage the religious faith or non-religious views of others.”
Also, the invocation will not be an official part of the Council’s Agenda.
Is that good enough?
