A judge in Texas has temporarily halted a policy announced by Kountze school superintendent Kevin Weldon barring cheerleaders from their practice of holding signs with religious messages. Banners with sayings like: “Thanks be to God which gives us victory through our Lord Jesus Christ” generated complaints through the Freedom From Religion Foundation, causing the change in policy. The judge’s ruling, however, allows the banners to continue bearing religious messages until he reaches a final decision on its constitutionality.

One cheerleader quoted by AP said no school resources are used to make the signs. Should that make a difference?
