Discipleship in a Democracy: Responding to the Threat of Christian Nationalism” is the focus of this year’s Forgotten Luther Symposium, held Oct. 25-26 at Saint Luke Lutheran Church in Silver Spring, Maryland. BJC Executive Director Amanda Tyler will provide a keynote address on the dangers of Christian nationalism, which will be Oct. 25 at 8:30 p.m. Click here to register and to purchase tickets for the two-day event. There are regular admission tickets for sale and a discounted ticket rate for student tickets.

The symposium is organized by Global Mission of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America; ELCA World Hunger; ELCA Metro D.C. Synod; and Saint Luke Lutheran Church.

The symposium is the fourth in the Forgotten Luther series, and this year’s event will seek to gather the insights of previous symposia to address a specific threat to both church and society: the rise of authoritarian government intent on misusing the role of the Christian church. Its focus will be on the rising popularity of white Christian nationalism in the United States. At the same time, African, Asian and Latin American participants in an earlier seminar on this same theme, sponsored jointly by the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) and the Finnish Evangelical Lutheran Mission (FELM), a branch of the Church of Finland, will provide an important global dimension to the symposium.

In addition to Tyler, the conference also features the Honorable Jamie Raskin and leaders from the ELCA, such as Roger Willer and Amy Reumann. International voices, including Michael Grzonka from Germany and Bruk Ayele Asale from Ethiopia, will also share their perspectives on this critical issue. Additionally, the conference will receive a special message from The Rev. Elizabeth Eaton, Presiding Bishop of the ELCA.
