Indiana's new school voucher program is sending thousands of students, along with their tax-funded tuition money, to religious schools. Associated Press reports (my emphasis):
Weeks after Indiana began the nation’s broadest school voucher program, thousands of students have transferred from public to private schools, causing a spike in enrollment at some Catholic institutions that were recently on the brink of closing.
It is a scenario public school advocates have long feared: Students fleeing local districts in large numbers, taking with them vital tax dollars that often end up at parochial schools.
Taxpayer money should not be used to provide children with a religious education, or to save struggling religious schools, but especially not at the expense of public education. Why should public money be used to provide support for a religious program unable to acquire enough support on its own?
