A judge in Bay Minette, Alabama is offering some non-violent criminals an interesting choice: do jail time or go to church. Operation Restore Our Community saves the city money in incarceration costs, officials argue, by giving the option of a year's worth of Sundays in church instead of time behind bars.
But at what cost?
As the ACLU notes, the "government has no business promoting church attendance, let alone requiring it."
Is the choice between church and jail even a real choice?
