A Ten Commandments monument will stay on the courthouse lawn in West Virginia’s Wyoming County, despite the ACLU’s concern that it violates the separation of church and state. Not to worry, says County Prosecutor Michael Cochrane.
“I researched different religions as far as whether the Ten Commandments is discriminatory or not,” Cochrane said. “Basically a type of Ten Commandments is cut across a lot of religions.”
Cochrane says it promotes laws that are based on some of the commandments. He also says the Ten Commandments are recognized as a universal code of conduct by many people.
While he was at it, Cochrane should have researched court rulings that landed Kentucky counties in serious legal debt after insisting on a Ten Commandments monument.Whether it’s constitutional or not depends on the nature of the monument, not the nature of the Ten Commandments.
