In Ohio, a Holocaust memorial planned for the Statehouse is raising questions among some lawmakers regarding potential church-state disputes. According to the Washington Post, the Governor argues the structure, which includes a prominent Star of David, will teach an important lesson about man’s capacity to be inhuman towards others. The Chair of the Advisory Board, however, is concerned the emphasis on the Jewish faith may open the monument up to constitutional challenges.
One important difference among many between this structure and the one I described earlier today , the Lake Elsinore monument halted by a judge’s injunction, is the Holocaust memorial is being privately funded.
On the other important questions – does the monument have a secular purpose, and does it have the effect of promoting religion? – is it different enough to merit a different fate? Read about the Ohio monument here to decide.
