Florida's Collier County has reached an agreement with World Changers over the group's desire to continue distributing Bibles at public schools during Religious Freedom Day, January 16.
The case, filed in the U.S. District Court in Fort Myers in July is officially settled with the Board’s decision Thursday.
Following that decision, the School Board adjusted its policies to make it clear that Bibles aren’t the only materials that may be available on Religious Freedom Day.
Language in the new policy assures that secular materials will be available to students as well as religious materials.
I'm still somewhat uncomfortable with the idea of religious and atheist advocates using public schools to have direct communication with middle school children, going around parents. Introduction to matters of faith is something for families to do together. And it's certainly possible to teach about the civic importance of religious freedom without distributing materials of indoctrination. Still, this solution is surely an improvement over one in which Bible distribution alone is accommodated during the school day on school grounds.
