In Florida’s Broward County, the school board plans to vote today to officially oppose a ballot initiative that would fundamentally alter the safeguards protecting the state’s taxpayers from funding religious activity. Amendment 8 removes more than a hundred years of protection, stripping the “no aid to religion” provision and paving the way for a school voucher system. Now teachers and school officials are speaking up to say no.

If the resolution passes, Broward will join the Florida School Boards Association and several districts in the state that oppose the measure.

The FSBA said the amendment will “remove an essential portion of the state constitution that serves to protect our citizens –  including our children – from state funded religious indoctrination,” according to the resolution.

The matter goes to Florida voters next month. Stay tuned.
