BJC Executive Director Amanda Tyler will speak on a panel titled “Christian Nationalism and the Texas Public Sphere” at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, April 8, during the day-long “Telling the Story of Religion in Texas through Journalism” event, held on the campus of SMU in Dallas, Texas. Joining Tyler on the panel are David R. Brockman, non-resident scholar in religion and public policy, Baker Institute, Rice University; adjunct professor, Texas Christian University; Mark A. Chancey, professor of religious studies, Southern Methodist University; and Robert Downen, democracy reporter, The Texas Tribune. The conversation will be moderated by Jack Jenkins, reporter at Religion News Service.
The day-long event at Southern Methodist University in Dallas will convene Texas journalists, public scholars, and community leaders to explore how religion shapes our state and how journalism captures its evolving role. It is presented by the Institute for Diversity and Civic Life, Religion News Service, Southern Methodist University’s Department of Religious Studies and The Texas Tribune. The event is sponsored by The Eula May & John Baugh Foundation, The Henry Luce Foundation and Humanities Texas.
