American flag waving in blue skyWritten by Don Byrd

Happy 4th of July to all BJC Blog readers! What better day than today to appreciate our freedoms of religious liberty – the freedom to believe (or not), the freedom to live in accordance with those beliefs without fear, and the joy of knowing our faith is truly free of favor or coercion from the government. Soul freedom. Freedom of conscience. Religious liberty.

One person working hard to maintain those ideals is Melissa Rogers, a Baptist and former BJC Counsel who now heads the White House Office of Faith-Based and Neighborhood Partnerships under President Obama. Last week, the Baptist Joint Committee honored her with the J.M. Dawson Religious Liberty Award after she gave the keynote address at this year’s Religious Liberty Council luncheon, in Atlanta.

You can watch video of the luncheon here. Have a great Independence Day weekend!
