Darling of the religious right for his pronouncements against church-state separation, and his peculiar twists of garbled American history supporting those conclusions, David Barton continues to increase his stature in some political circles. As Mother Jones' Siddhartha Mahanta notes, today's NYTimes featured Barton in something of a puff piece, marveling at his prolific speaking engagements and touting his rising influence, but barely scratching the surface of the withering professional critiques that have shown many of his historical interpretations to be flawed.
Jon Stewart did a nice job questioning Barton on The Daily Show in last night's episode. You can also read the Baptist Joint Committee's Brent Walker take-down of some of Barton's controversial views.
