The Defense Department has followed up on the tragic shooting deaths at Fort Hood, Texas with a report aimed at identifying policy areas that may need revision to prevent similar incidents in the future. Included are a few recommendations dealing with policies toward religious accommodation. Religion Clause's Howard Friedman has the list of relevant findings – go check it out. My question is: do these ideas – particularly ones that would enhance the military's ability to deny recognition of certain religious perspectives and activities – reflect an overreach?
