In Kentucky, Governor Beshear is in hot water for having the nerve to call the Christmas tree at the Capitol a "holiday tree".
Beshear administration spokeswoman Cindy Lanham said the tree will be in celebration of a variety of winter holidays, including Christmas and Hanukkah.
…
In Kentucky, political foes are using the issue to bash the Democratic governor and his administration."Steve Beshear in his continued swing to the left shows that political correctness is more important than Kentucky values," said Republican Senate President David Williams of Burkesville. "It is difficult to see how anyone could take offense at the cherished tradition of Christmas at the Kentucky Capitol."
Well, come on, it's not that difficult. As Brent Walker wrote nearly 2 year ago on this same topic, the issue here is one of manners, and there's nothing wrong with showing some once in a while. At the same time, he argued, a Christmas tree is a Christmas tree, and a symbol the Supreme Court has determined to be secular enough to be allowed. That doesn't mean, of course, that it's a good idea, or very neighborly, to emphasize one holiday over others. Kudos to the Governor for trying to do the right thing.
