The Detroit Free Press reports that the Michigan Supreme Court has passed a controversial new rule by a vote of 5-2 which will allow judges to require the removal of religious head coverings at their discretion to "assess the demeanor" of a witness. Many religious liberty advocates – including the Baptist Joint Committee – had argued against the rule for its failure to protect religiously mandated facial coverings which are essential to the religious expression of many Muslim women.
