School still life with copyspace on chalkboard

Church-state separation advocates in North Carolina are challenging a high school’s decision not to approve a secular student organization. The Secular Student Alliance is a national organization with chapters in many schools, but Pisgah High School officials in Canton told students the group would not “fit in” at the school, according to a letter sent by the ACLU and FFRF.

Religion News Service reports.

That response is a violation of the Equal Access Act, the letter states. The act requires all schools receiving federal funds to refrain from discriminating against student groups on the basis of their religious, philosophical or political beliefs. It also requires schools to appoint a sponsor if none volunteer.

Stay tuned.
