Earlier today I posted about a Center for American Progress panel discussion on the nature of religious liberty. Following the event, moderator Sally Steenland sat down with one of the panelists, Bishop Gene Robinson, who offered a compelling question about the state of religious liberty and religious liberty rhetoric today.

Sally Steenland:…What was your takeaway from the event?

Bishop Gene Robinson: The most interesting thing for me is that there seemed to be a consensus among panelists that religious liberty is not at risk in this country. One is left to conclude that it’s being used as a wedge issue, a solution to something that isn’t a problem. And one has to wonder, what’s behind it?

What’s behind it, indeed?
