This week’s GOP convention has generated no shortage of interest and news coverage with a lens on the issue of religion and politics. Here is a rundown of some of the things I am reading that you may also find helpful:
At the indispensable Religion Clause, Howard Friedman has published a series of posts (you can scroll through them here) on elements of the GOP platform that relate in some way to religion or religious interests. (I also posted about the platform’s misguided call for the repeal of the IRS ban on electioneering by tax-exempt churches.)
Much attention has gone to an invocation given at the convention by South Carolina pastor Mark Burns. You can watch video and read the transcript in this Think Progress’ coverage here. On this subject, NYTimes columnist Nicholas Kristof offers this op-ed in which he called the invocation “staggeringly tasteless and politicized.”
Religion News Service offers “Five Faith Facts” about vice-presidential nominee Governor Mike Pence (R-IN).
Meanwhile, on Tuesday night, Dr. Ben Carson attempted to draw a bizarre connection between Hillary Clinton and Lucifer. The Washington Post’s Robert Costa spoke with Carson about the reference.
What am I missing? What religion and religious liberty-related coverage of the convention are you reading? Send me an e-mail, or tweet @BJCblog.
