Are there still public schools out there that broadcast prayers over the loudspeaker before football games, you ask? Despite the clarity of court rulings, the emphasis of Education Department guidelines, and the news stories that crop up year after year, are there still counties and school districts across the country that need continued education on this point? Parents too?
The answer to that is, without question, yes:
A lot of DeSoto [County High School] parents say they like the idea of prayer, and they'll fight to keep it, but the law may force the administration to back off its policy on the matter.
Kathy Beaugrand says she's fighting mad at a Wisconsin-based groups demand that DeSoto Schools end prayer before school events.
She believes its one of the good things about the schools here "I think it's ridiculous and I'd tell them to bring it on. I think we should fight it and if we have to let's be the first ones to do it, let's do it."
Kathy, you wouldn't be the first! Nor, it would seem, the last. Freedom From Religion Foundation sent a letter to DeSoto officials, but has not yet filed suit after receiving complaints about prayer at the Mississippi county's athletic events and graduation ceremonies. Here's hoping all of that fighting spirit gets enough of a breather to mix in some clear thinking and common sense. Government-led prayer at public school events threatens the religious liberty of all.
