Coalition Including BJC Opposes Vouchers in Letter to Senate Committee

The National Coalition for Public Education sent a letter to leaders of the Senate Education Committee urging them to oppose efforts to insert school voucher funding into the Education bill. The Baptist Joint Committee is one of 56 organizations that signed the letter, which laid out the many reasons to oppose school vouchers. It notes “voucher programs have proven ineffective, lack accountability to taxpayers, and deprive students of rights provided to public school students.”

Texas’ State Board of Education voted 10-5 Friday urging the Senate to oppose any variety of school voucher legislation. Senate Bill 23, which passed the Senate Education Committee, would provide tax credits to businesses that provide money to low-income students to attend private or religious schools.

The Indiana Supreme Court today rejected arguments that the state’s school voucher program violates provisions in the state constitution prohibiting the state from supporting, or compelling individuals to support, a religious institution.

Brief Makes Religious Liberty Argument Against Louisiana Vouchers

Religious liberty advocates are joining the dispute over school vouchers in Louisiana. The program was ruled an unconstitutional diversion of funds away from the public school system back in December. In a friend of the court brief filed Friday, organizations including the Interfaith Alliance urged the state’s appeals court to affirm the trial court’s ruling, and gave them an additional reason: the program improperly funds religious exercise.
